Every year, Bancography publishes an Outlook for the financial services industry, examining deposit, demographic, and economic trends across the U.S. As we were preparing to publish the 2020 iteration of our Outlook, the COVID-19 crisis arose, upending the U.S. economy and its banking sector. Now, one year later, with vaccine rollouts accelerating and employment levels increasing, the economy may be returning to normalcy. However, the year-plus of COVID disruption created severe impacts for banks and credit unions, with a challenge of surplus deposit levels and slackening loan demand impeding earnings. But a recovering economy augurs well for the post-COVID era, so this Outlook examines industry trends over the past year and provides advice to help plan for that phase.
